End of Swissmetal’s consultation phase – trade unions consider further possible measures

The Swissmetal Company’s subsidiary Swissmetal Industries AG announced today on the occasion of the end of the consultation phase that continuing operational activities under its own steam is only possible on a reduced basis and that, regrettably, not all jobs can be retained. The Swissmetal Board of Directors has therefore decided to concentrate future activities in sustainable and profitable business units in order to ensure these units’ continued existence. As announced today, concentrating future business activities will result in a downsizing of the workforce at the Dornach site by 268 persons.

The Reconvilier production site will not be affected by the layoffs.  The German production site in Lüdenscheid is still in full operation.

Swissmetal Industries AG hopes that this measure will enable the company’s healthy sectors to continue to operate under their own power. In the past weeks, Swissmetal Industries AG has collaborated with the administrators to examine various options for the continued existence of the company as a whole or in parts.   This involved numerous meetings with the trade unions and potential investors.

Swissmetal Industries AG plans to continue meeting with all interested parties in order to devise and implement the best possible solution. At present, the Swiss Secretariat for Economic Affairs (seco), the Cantons of Berne and Solothurn and the trade unions are considering further measures, which are to be discussed with Swissmetal Industries AG and the administrators by this coming Monday, 22 August, that is before the agreed terminations. The situation could be re-evaluated should these measures give Swissmetal Industries AG additional scope. Swissmetal wishes to thank the trade unions expressly their strenuous efforts.

As of 20 July 2011, Swissmetal Industries AG was granted provisional protection against creditors due to an acute liquidity crisis.  The company initiated a consultation procedure on 7 July 2011 with the trade unions regarding the dismissal of as many as 290 employees at the Dornach site.
