Origin in the 19th century
In 1879 the firm of Heinrich Jaeger, Lüdenscheid started manufacturing small metal parts. In 1896, with the set-up of a rolling mill, the firm became a semi-finished metal products factory.
From 1900 to 1989
The firm was converted to an AG (public company) in 1900. In 1927 it acquired a Krupp extrusion press and four years later it bought an electric casting furnace. In the 40’s the company took on the manufacture of semi-finished goods made of brass alloys and light metal rods and profiles. A new 18-MN extrusion press and new wire drawing units were installed. In 1965 came the building of a new foundry and a new finished goods warehouse. In the meantime the company was bought again and again by various investors, in the course of which the firm’s name changed every time. In 1974 a wire extrusion moulding unit was purchased to expand the wire product range. A year later the company specialised in brass wire, thin brass rods and profiles. This was associated with the closure of the rolling mill in Düren and the cessation of large parts of brass rod production. At the end of the 70’s there was investment in a 24-MN press and a bright annealing unit.
From 1990-2005
In 1990, Swissmetal took over the German Busch-Jaeger Lüdenscheider Metallwerk GmbH. The German company was one of the first German metalworks to be certified to DIN ISO 9002. In the mid-90’s it was decided to obtain a 30-MN indirect press. As a result of a liquidity bottleneck at the Busch-Jaeger works and the generally poor economic situation in Germany, the factory was deconsolidated at the end of 2002 and declared insolvent at the start of 2003. In this context a moratorium agreement was signed with a bank consortium. In summer 2004 came the refinancing of the Group, thanks to which it was possible to make a new start.
Since 2006
In mid-February 2006 Swissmetal was able to announce the acquisition of Busch-Jaeger Metallwerk GmbH, Lüdenscheid. After insolvency in 2003, the factory had been taken over by a group of investors and had made very positive progress in the meantime. The re-merger with Busch-Jaeger, which is now known as Swissmetal Lüdenscheid GmbH, complements the range especially in small and medium-sized wires and rods.
